在2004年亚洲杯上，年轻的扎雷进入了主帅伊万科维奇的视线，并与阿拉维一起，受到了重用。在古汉执教时期，扎雷并没有入选伊朗国奥队，古汉下课以后，在伊万科维奇的力谏之下，临时主教练法拉基选入了扎雷和阿拉维，并迅速委以重任。
而古汉不用扎雷也有理由，即扎雷脾气比较大，容易冲动的球员。这一点在2004年亚洲杯上得到了体现，在与中国队的半决赛中，扎雷与邵佳一在抢位置，由于不满意邵佳一的责问，扎雷上前推了邵佳一胸口，邵佳一当即倒地，塔拉特毫不犹豫出示了红牌。扎雷当即委曲地跪在地上，眼角流出了泪水，这一场景曾也让很多人动容。
当时年轻的扎雷还想争辩几句，老将代伊走过来，用力把他推离场，并且高声责骂着扎雷。年轻的扎雷一边走，一边任眼泪横流，为年轻而付出了惨痛的代价。不过经过两年的磨练，扎雷的表现越来越成熟，并且已经成了伊朗后防不可多得的大将。
